the cut

The cutting of travertine is crucial as it significantly affects the final appearance, making it seem like two distinct materials despite coming from the same block. Vein cut and cross cut refer to the direction of the cut: vein cut, which is more common, is perpendicular to the stratification and results in slabs with clear, pronounced striations that highlight the sediment layers running lengthwise. Cross cut, also known as fleury-cut, is parallel to the stratification and reveals often circular, almost floral patterns, known as “clouding.”

the filling

Filling is a common process for travertine, which is characterized by numerous small cavities in its semi-compact structure. Depending on the desired performance and aesthetic outcome, one can choose to fill or leave these voids. Unfilled travertine remains untreated in its natural porous state, resulting in a rustic appearance with exposed holes. Filled travertine, on the other hand, has its pores sealed with color-matched materials such as cement, mastic, or resin, creating a smooth, homogeneous surface. This filling process can enhance the stone’s resistance and compactness and can also be decorative, depending on the desired finish.
